Vanuatu to Accept CBI Funds in Multiple Currencies

On 6th August 2021, under order 124 of 2021, the government of Vanuatu amended the CBI regulations for its Development Support Program (Citizenship Act 33 of 2019) to allow CBI investors to make payments in the following currencies and amounts – the amounts shown are for a single applicant and a family of 4 respectively:

  • US dollars: USD 1000: and 180,000
  • Australian dollars: AUD 181,000 and 251,000
  • New Zealand dollars: NZD 197,000 and 273,000
  • Japanese Yen: JPY 14,990,000 and 20,755,000

Previously only funds in US dollars were accepted.

The amendments also included provisions for payment of CBI funds to be transacted through 4 banks in addition to the National Bank of Vanuatu. These are:  Bred Bank, Bank South Pacific (Vanuatu) Limited, ANZ Bank (Vanuatu) Limited and Wanfuteng Bank.

Since 2018 the Vanuatu Government has allowed its CBI agents to accept payment in crypto currencies.

In 2020 income generated by the Vanuatu’s Citizenship Contribution Program and Honorary Citizenship Development Support Program amounted to USD $132.6m, representing 42% of government revenue. This was up from $105.5m and $87.6m in 2019 and 2018 respectively.
